Royal Ballet Master Classes - Nicol Edmonds & Claire Calvert
Last month we were graced with the divine presence of two very distinguished ballet dancers, Nicol Edmonds and Claire Calvert, both Soloist and First Soloist at The Royal Ballet respectively. An amazing opportunity particularly as they spared their days off to teach some of my En Avant Ballet dancers!
First up on Sunday 19th February was Nicol who's Beginner Ballet Master Class had the speedy delivery of Company class but was still thorough in technical tips and very musical. He confidently took my EAB dancers through the barre work with emphasis on port de bras and posture - which as we know are staple byproducts of learning ballet, yet the small technical details can be a little overlooked when teaching adults. This transferred fluidly into centre practice where we worked on pirouettes - aaahhhhh the dreaded pirouette from 5th! Nicol had some excellent points for power and co-ordination (particularly involving use of arms and head) and because male dancers are known for their turns, these were invaluable tips! Above all, Nicol's accessible and friendly personality meant that the class was personal and fun with a lot of interaction - just like everyday En Avant Ballet classes!
Next up was First Soloist Claire Calvert on Sunday 26th February who gave us an incredible insight into the world of ballet very rarely seen by non dancers. Her Beginner Pointe Work Master Class started with guidance on how to sew ribbons, elastics, break the shoes in (make them softer and more comfortable to dance in) and how to tie ribbons correctly. Most of the ladies who took part in this workshop had little or no pointe work experience so this was a great 'how-to' lesson which I am sure they will remember for a long time. Claire followed this with a series of exercises at the barre which included releves, rises, plies and echappes as well as the iconic bouree . . . A room full of happy Beginner Ballerinas!
Thanks to both Nicol and Claire for giving us such unforgettable experiences and we all look forward to your return to En Avant Ballet!
