FIRSTLY - WHAT IS BALLET?!

Good question, but do you really know the answer?

Ballet isn't an exercise fad that's for sure. It's an art form which has its roots as far back as the Italian Renaissance, spanning all the subsequent centuries and is made up of a highly disciplined, formalized series of steps, full body movements and gestures. How ballet has found itself with the reputation of being an incredible workout is because of the demands put on the ballerinas and ballet dancers today; these are ever more physically challenging, strenuous and mentally consuming. Professional dancers today are finely tuned athletes with an autonomous mindset and are among the fittest in the world!

So there's no surprise it's become super trendy to learn, as people use it to achieve their fitness goals.

But there's also the holistic side of ballet. The combination of movement and classical music is very healing and visceral. Most exercise fads focus on 'the burn' or the so-called ultimate goal of achieving the 'body of your dreams' but classical ballet takes you on a journey. This journey will require you to put aside all assumptions, step out of your comfort zone and prepare you to work hard. And its that journey that helps cultivate a more loving, patient and fulfilling relationship with ourselves. 

So there you have it. Ballet benefits your body, mind and your soul. Who knew?
